How can being creative together in sessions help?
Using creativity in sessions can deepen your experience of connection through expressing and exploring your internal world, your experiences and meanings. Sitting in the safe connection of another, without instruction, rules, or judgement while you create representations of your internal world can enable emotions to be expressed and feelings felt and seen that might have felt stuck confusing or unresolvable on the inside. Reflecting and exploring together what you see, feel and experience as you do this can help the therapeutic process by acknowledging a sense of who you are, which is fundamental to feeling safe and connected and emotional well-being.
You may think of yourself as 'not being creative' and often this comes from experiences of the past, such as school, where you were assessed and marked for your creativity.
Being creative in counselling is not in any way about being good at art or drawing - it is about expression in any way you feel is helpful. It may be colours shapes, lines, patterns that flow, or expression of experiences and relationships by creating scenes and placing characters in sand, maybe exploring a favourite book or film character through story or poetry, and possibly by creating a mixed media collage of cuttings, images and textures.
We can use objects symbolising parts of Self, exploring how you experience your inner world, relationships and connection.
There are many ways for us to consider your meaning of creativity, to help your individual process, if you so wish. The aim is always for me to be with you, to be witness and for me to accompany and support you in your interpretations without judgement.
In my counselling rooms there are a variety of creative items for us to try - I may suggest and invite exploration - your curiosity and indeed your resistance, are welcome and can become part of your experience in understanding and expressing your inner world.
